Business Writing Workshop Copywriting Basics - 3 Things to Know About Salesmanship in Print
Every business exists to perform a service or sell a product, and the only way to bring in customers or drive sales is through marketing, or "telling" others about what you have for them. Copywriting is the art of writing or typing something that persuades someone to take an action. Usually, as a business person, you want this action to result in some sort of purchase so that you can profit.
Copywriting is "Salesmanship in Print"
People decide to purchase something because the value that they perceive it will provide to them outweighs the cost to acquire it. In order to understand value, people need to be educated about these benefits.
It's the actual art of explaining these benefits that is the study of copywriting. One's attention needs to be grabbed, then once attention has been grabbed, you need to keep it. The art of copywriting is a study that can take months and even years to develop. In an effort to provide a short term action plan for you to apply to your copywriting strategies, I'll provide you with this 3 step plan:
Problem - Agitation - Solution
Problem - First you need to address a problem that your potential customer would have. You want to start out with some words that will relate to them, that they will agree with. Such as: "As we enter more and more into the most depressed economies of our time."
Agitation - Next, now that you have developed a rapport with that first statement, it's time to "pour a little salt into their wound" Such as: "It's becoming more and more difficult to keep up with prices and inflation."
First you started by stating an obvious problem, then you made them uncomfortable by using words that will make them think about their current situation. This should be something obvious, as this will neutralize the other person's defenses and will sync you up with their subconscious mind. Their thought after you state the agitation should be something like, "YOU BET IT IS!"
Now they are open to auto-suggestion for the solution to the problem that you are providing.
Solution - This is simple. This is your turn to show what people are doing to overcome the problem that you stated in step one. Such as: "To move away from the pressure and stress, more and more people are turning towards the internet looking for a way to supplement or develop new income streams or new business opportunities."
By following this simple 3 step approach, Problem, Agitation, Solution, you'll be able to persuade people to perform the necessary actions for them to become a customer for your business.
